A pergola is similar but larger with four open walls and a flat, latticework roof. Trellis is a flat, latticed surface that is used on the sides and roofs of arbors, pergolas or other structures and can also form its own standing structure. It is the ideal surface for climbing plants.

You can buy a prefabricated garden arbor for as cheap as $200, while more expensive ones could go for as much as $1,000.

For a basic pergola, you can expect to pay approximately $2,000 to $5,000, though this cost could run as high as $10,000 if you use expensive materials or build a patio to go underneath.

Trellis comes in a number of prefabricated structures, everything from planter boxes and stand alone arches or columns for $75 to $200 to folding screens and large, ornamental structures for $200 to $500+. Garden trellis can also be bought by the section, usually 4 foot by 8 foot. To build a sixteen foot privacy fence, you'd spend about $250 in materials (which also includes crushed stone, end posts, screws and fasteners) or pay about double that to have a pro do it. Buy pre-made sections of trellis at your local hardware store starting at around $60 for a 4x8 plastic sections and $50-$100 for similarly sized wood trellis panels made of cedar.
