If you live in western or southwestern portions of the country, you don't need to be reminded that oppressive summer temperatures can foil plans to spend an afternoon on your patio. Those from more northern climes must deal with a summer conundrum of a different sort, as they've longingly eyed their patio during the cold months, only to experience sweltering days that thwart their outdoor entertainment plans. No matter where you live, however, you can wrest control of the summer away from the sun through the use of a patio misting system. Below you'll find more information about patio misting systems, including how much they cost.
Patio Misting System Basics #
Patio mist systems spray water mist into the air and cool the surrounding area. Cooling results as fine droplets of sprayed water evaporate, and there is also a refreshing effect from the mist itself. Higher end patio misters can lower the perceived temperate by as much as 25 to 35 degrees.
The types of patio mister systems are distinguished by the amount of water pressure (psi) they can generate. Higher water pressure creates smaller droplets which evaporate more quickly. These systems are more efficient, but require a pump to create additional pressure, which adds to the cost of the patio mist system. Systems that operate with lower water pressure create larger water droplets which can sometimes lead to wetness. They don't require a pump, however, as they use household water pressure to disperse the water droplets, and as a result these outdoor misting systems cost less.
Patio Misting System Average Costs #
The cost of a patio misting system is generally determined by how powerful the unit is and whether or not it is professionally installed.
- Basic patio mister kits start at around $30 to $100. Don't expect much from these systems, however, as they tend to cool an area by simply wetting it.
- For a high-quality outdoor misting system, expect to pay $1,500 to $3,500 or more. Such a system should include a pump that boosts water pressure to 1,000 psi. If purchased separately, a misting pump costs approximately $500 to $1,500, though high end units could cost upwards of $5,000.
- Misting fans, such as those used on the sidelines at football games, are all-in-one cooling units that can cost anywhere from $500 to $4,500 depending on the fan's capabilities.
- If you opt for professional installation of your patio misting system, plan on spending an additional 25% to 35%.
