Looking for a countertop that stands out? Zinc is a soft metal that adds a warm, distinct look to both modern and classic kitchens.
Left untreated, zinc will develop a natural bluish-gray tarnish, or patina. Many buyers choose this material precisely for the rustic charm that creates. Or, you can opt for a clear coating that will preserve the silver color.
Zinc countertops are growing in popularity, but they're not for everyone. The look is unique and they're more expensive than many other types of countertops. Nevertheless, for the right buyer, the benefits are many: zinc is long lasting, eco-friendly and it has antibacterial qualities.
About Zinc Countertops #
Zinc is a metal that naturally rejects bacteria, mold, and mildew. This makes the material one of the safest available for kitchen countertops. And because zinc is a natural material, it is considered more eco-friendly than synthetic or man-made countertops. It is also recyclable.
Unlike stainless steel, don't expect the surface of your zinc countertop to retain an even, polished look. The soft metal may quickly develop dings and scratches. And because zinc reacts to everything from fingerprints to lemon juice, the surface color is constantly changing. As mentioned earlier, this is part of the appeal for most people who purchase zinc countertops. But, it's not for everyone.
Zinc countertops are easy to clean with soap and water. They're also stain resistant. However, zinc countertops are susceptible to damage from heat and knife marks, so you'll have to be careful with hot pans and remember to use a cutting board - unless you're trying to quickly create a distressed look.
Zinc Countertop Average Costs #
Zinc countertops aren't cheap. They begin at about $120 per square foot and run up to $200 per square foot or more, including installation. So if you need 30 square feet, the cost would be $3,600 to $6,000.
The tradeoff, however, is that zinc countertops can last for decades. They, also, tend to increase the resale value of your home.
Zinc countertops are made from panels that are anywhere from 1/8- to 1/4-inches thick. The panels are usually 8- to 10-feet long and 39- to 44-inches wide. Generally, the zinc is formed over a backing made of plywood or another composite material. You can also choose to install zinc over an existing laminate countertop.
