Solid surfacing was invented by DuPont in the 1960s and has been a mainstay of the countertop market ever since. Solid surface countertops are virtually indestructible and come in a wide range of patterns, including realistic stone imitations. Choose an undermounted sink and an integrated backsplash for a continuous, sanitary countertop.
Solid Surface Basics #
Here's what you need to know about solid surface if you're considering the countertop material for your kitchen or bathroom project.
Composition #
Solid surface kitchen countertops are constructed from mineral fillers and hard, durable plastic resins (acrylic, polyester, or a combination of the two; acrylic-based counters tend to perform slightly better). Some manufacturers use recycled plastics for a more eco-friendly product, although on the whole, solid surface isn't a particularly Green building material because it contains petroleum-based products. It is, however, being increasingly touted as a renewable material.
Performance #
Solid surfacing is non-porous as well as stain, heat, impact, mold, mildew, and bacteria resistant. While the material does scratch and nick, minor surface damage can be sanded and polished out (in fact, you can resurface your solid surface every few years for a like-new appearance) Avoid resting hot pots and pans on solid surface for prolonged periods, as this can discolor the countertop.
Much has been made about whether or not solid surface countertops can be considered "seamless." It might be more accurate to say that solid surface seams are "inconspicuous," or that the counters are "virtually seamless." What is true is that when an integrated sink and coved backsplash are chosen, solid surfacing forms a single, nonporous surface that's extremely hygienic and perfect for food prep.
Installation #
In order to get the "seamless" appearance touted by solid surface manufacturers, professional fabrication and installation is required. As a result, solid surface countertops should not be considered a DIY project.
Options #
Solid surfacing is made by numerous manufacturers, including DuPont, LG, Formica, Wilsonart, Silestone, and Avonite. Among these countertop makers you'll find hundreds of different solid surface colors and a wide range of patterns. Patterns that resemble natural stone and concrete are among the most popular, although solid colors (including neutral, metallic, earth tones, and vibrant tones) are available. The best way to familiarize yourself with solid surface color choices is to visit manufacturer websites and order samples.
In addition to countertop design, you have a choice of solid surface countertop edges, which include round, bevel, bullnose, and ogee. More complex edge designs will add to the project cost. Various thicknesses are also available, but the standard solid surface thickness is ½ inch. Some manufacturers offer a lineup of solid surface sinks that can be paired with countertops.
Solid Surface Countertop Average Costs #
- Solid surfacing starts at $40 to $80 per square foot installed and can cost as much as $100 to $140 per square foot installed.
- Factors that affect pricing include the quality and thickness of the materials, local labor and material costs, countertop size and layout, whether you choose custom edging and/or an integrated sink, and more.
- Most solid surface countertops come with a 10-15 year warranty. Check with individual manufacturers to find out what is, and isn't, covered.
- Choosing an experienced solid surface installer is key if you want to avoid visible seams and ensure maximum performance.
