When you're maintaining large grounds or facilities, a commercial lawnmower is a must have piece of equipment. A residential mower just won't cut it when you're talking about cutting acres and acres of grass.

Commercial mowers are larger and more powerful than residential mowers. They are more durable because they're made with higher-quality parts. They also have higher blade speeds and more powerful engines.

Types of Commercial Mowers #

There are several types of commercial lawnmowers designed for various uses, including:

  • Zero-turn - designed to eliminate the need for trimming by cutting closely around obstacles; able to pivot 180 degrees without leaving a circle of uncut grass
  • Wide area - designed for lots of acreage
  • Sports turf
  • Trim mowers
  • Landscaping mowers

In addition, you'll need to decide whether to purchase a ride-on or walk-behind mower. Ride-on mowers are easier to operate, but they're usually more expensive. However, walk-behind mowers are fairly easy to operate, too: the vast majority are self-propelled, so the operator's only task is to guide the mower in the right direction.

Commercial lawnmowers are also available varying engine powers and deck sizes (the size of the blade). Horsepower generally ranges from 11 to 50 and deck sizes range from 25 inches to more than 50. If you're mowing a very large area, you probably want to opt for more horsepower and a larger deck size, which allows you to cut a wider area at once.

Commercial Mower Average Costs #

The price of a commercial mower depends on the brand and model, the horsepower, deck size and whether it's a ride-on or walk-behind. Generally, expect to pay anywhere from about $2,500 to $25,000.

Here is a sampling of what you can expect to pay for various models of commercial mowers:

  • The Toro TimeCutter SS4235 riding mower with a 42-inch blade and 20 HP sells for about $2,500 to $3,000.
  • The Gravely ZT50 with a 50-inch blade and 24 horsepower retails for about $3,400 to $3,600.
  • The Ariens Pro Zoom commercial riding mower with a 54-inch blade and 27 horsepower sells for about $7,300 to $7,500.
  • The EverRide Hornet zero-turn mower with a 52-inch blade, 23 horsepower sells for about $7,600 to $7,800.
  • A Ferris zero-turn mower with a 61-inch blade and 24 horsepower retails for around $12,500 to $13,500.

As you can see, zero-turn mowers tend to be more expensive. The technology is relatively new and highly sought-after.

If you're on a tight budget, consider shopping for a used commercial mower. Most dealers that sell new models also offer used options. You're likely to find a good selection of reliable used mowers at significantly discounted prices.
