Backhoe loaders are one of the most commonly used pieces of construction equipment. They're primarily used for digging holes and trenches. But, they also have a wide range of uses in farming, road work, landscaping, and demolition.

Backhoe loaders are popular for their versatility. They are essentially two machines in one, with a backhoe on one end for digging and a loader bucket on the other end for scooping.

New loaders are expensive. Machines with a 14-foot dig depth - the industry standard - usually sell for $50,000 to $90,000. This high price tag makes purchasing a used machine a popular alternative.

About Used Backhoe Loaders #

As with new backhoe loaders, you have a wide variety of features and options from which to choose when shopping for a used machine. One of the most important decisions is dig depth. The smallest and least expensive machines are capable of digging six feet deep, while the largest and priciest models offer dig depths of fifteen feet to eighteen feet.

You'll also need to decide how powerful you need the machine to be. A backhoe loader with 30 horsepower will work for small jobs. While, larger jobs might require horsepower in the range of 70 to 90. It helps if you have a rough idea of how much power you need before shopping various dealers.

Keep in mind that there's a big difference between a used backhoe loader and a refurbished backhoe loader. While there are many quality used backhoe loaders on the market, buying a refurbished model brings peace of mind that the machine has been reconditioned to the original manufacturer's standards. Some refurbished models also come with warranties, but expect a significant jump in price for that.

Used Backhoe Loader Average Costs #

Not surprisingly, larger and more powerful models with greater dig depths come at a higher price. The price of used backhoe loaders is also influenced by the age and condition of the machine, the brand, and the hours of use.

  • A five-year-old Case 580m with less than 1,000 hours, 14 feet or more of dig depth and 60 to 90 horsepower might run $60,000 to $70,000. The same model with 2,000 to 2,500 hours of use would probably sell for $30,000 to $40,000.
  • A 10-year-old John Deere in average condition with 2,000 to 3,000 hours of use might sell for $25,000 to $35,000.

Some brands of backhoe loaders hold their value especially well. Caterpillar backhoe loaders, for example, tend to be more expensive than other brands no matter whether they're purchased new or used. However, the machines are also known for quality and reliability.

  • A three-year-old CAT backhoe loader with less than 1,000 hours of use might sell for $120,000 to $130,000. The same model with 1,000 to 2,000 hours of use might sell for $80,000 to $90,000.

If you're willing to purchase a model that's around 15 years old with several thousand hours of use, you'll probably be able to find a used backhoe loader in the $15,000 to $20,000 range. However, when you get below $15,000, be wary of what you're buying. The machine may not have a long useful life ahead of it.
