The vast majority of golf carts on the market are electric. Electric golf carts are the preferred choice for golf courses and gated communities. They are, also, a popular mode of transportation on college campuses and at airports - among many other places.

Unlike gasoline-powered golf carts, electric models have zero emissions. There's less cost to operate them because there's no need for petrol; all they use is some electricity. Simply plug them in to charge and you're ready to go. It costs 2 to 4 cents per mile to operate an electric cart vs. 12 to 14 cents per mile to run a gas powered golf cart.

Most consumers who shop for a golf cart opt for electric. Unless you're using the golf cart for outdoor work such as farming or landscaping, you probably don't need the added power that comes with a gasoline engine.

About Electric Golf Carts #

Most electric golf carts have 36 or 48 volts of power, with 48-volt models providing better performance. Occasionally, you'll find a 24 volt of 72 volt model, although they are rare.

Electric golf carts are designed to be used during the day and charged at night. They're typically plugged into a standard electrical outlet but you can also purchase a portable charger if you plan to use the golf cart for long trips. Most electric golf carts can be driven for up to 40 miles on a single charge.

Because electric golf carts produce zero emissions, they can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

Electric Golf Cart Average Costs #

Electric and gas-powered golf carts are similar in price. Many manufacturers offer identical models in either electric or gas versions.

You can find a very basic, stripped down model for around $4,000 or you can spend up to $15,000 for a custom golf cart with luxury features like radios, DVD players and coolers.

However, the vast majority of electric golf carts sell for $5,000 to $10,000. For that price, you'll be able to purchase a standard two- or four-seater with features including headlights, a windshield and zip covers.

  • A Yamaha Drive 48-volt, two-seater generally sells for $5,000 to $6,000.
  • An EZ-GO RXV 48-volt, two-seater usually costs $7,500 to $8,500.

Golf carts for industrial use tend to be more expensive than those for leisure and recreation. They're larger and might have extra features like a bed on the back for hauling supplies. Budget around $8,000 to $12,000 for those.
